Biography

Kathy Pollak grew up in New York City. She was accepted into the High School of Music and Art after meeting their rigorous entrance requirements. This school is now known as Fiorello H LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts. Kathy was a bronze medal winner from the Art Students League in a city-wide contest and received a scholarship to the Pratt Institute. Her BA is in Fine Arts from Hunter College.

Kathy’s skills as an artist cover a broad range of media. She creates with oils, water color, pen and ink, and colored pencils and does three-dimensional work, including original sculpted dolls. Kathy worked for a time as a commercial artist. “How-to” articles and photos of her dolls have appeared in Dolls and Doll Crafter &Costuming magazines. She is member of professional societies; the Florida chapter of SCBWI (Society of Children’s Book Writers & Illustrators),  Creative Artists Guild, Inc.  and Dunedin Fine Arts Center. Kathy has earned recognition in all the fields of art she has pursued.

A retired classroom teacher, Kathy spent most of her thirty-two years teaching first grade, twice appearing in Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers. Kathy is a member of Alpha Delta Kappa. Alpha Delta Kappa is an international honorary organization of women educators dedicated to educational excellence, altruism and world understanding.

She also taught art to children of all ages including adults. Her interest in words came from her father who published books, wrote Off Broadway plays and television scripts.

Kathy created many story books for her classes over the years. Teaching children to write is one of her joys. Often her books started as teaching tools, modeling for students how to paint with words and use illustrations to add detail. Children look forward to Kathy’s colorful books, which encourage imagination and creativity.

From the time she was a child Kathy loved to sing. Her Italian father sang all the old songs around the apartment and anytime the family went for a drive in the car. When she was really young her mother said she sounded like a frog. That is probably where her love of frogs came from. Luckily she no longer sounds like a frog.

Kathy has lived in New York, New Jersey and New Hampshire. Her last move took her to Florida. As she moved she was always a part of her church choir and joined the community choirs. At Christmas Kathy has sung with a madrigal group bringing holiday festivities to seniors at assisted living facilities and nursing homes. She also performs during the annual Go For Baroque Festival in Dunedin FL. You can enjoy her performance with the group at her YouTube site.
